Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. She was an American poet that was known for her strength in creativity and wrote about 1,800 poems in her lifetime. During Dickinson’s life, she spent most of her time reading, at school, doing religious activities or exploring life and the world and nature around her. Most of the work she wrote was kept very private or only shared with family or close friends. Emily Dickinson was not very social. As she got older, she spent most of her time alone and rarely left her room.
Dickinson is known for writing poems with strong meanings that stick with a person throughout their lifetime. Even though Dickinson started writing during her teens, it wasn't until the Civil War around 1858 when her poetry became more of her own style. While she kept her poems private, her poetry was not published until after she passed away on May 15, 1886.
Most of Dickinson’s themes in her poems were about death, life, the inner world, pain, separation, ecstasy, love, God, religion, and nature. Because of these themes, many people could relate to her poems. This is one reason why her poetry is known to be so memorable.
